Key Distinguisher #5: Competencies for In-Demand Careers

Work-based learning should focus on skill development for careers that employers and labor market data show to be in high demand. Opportunities geared toward younger students may prioritize the transferable skills that are required across occupations and industries and can serve as the foundation for future, more occupation-specific skill development.

Features of Competencies for In-Demand Careers

  • Young people are engaging in meaningful work that provides value to the young person, employer, and/or community
  • Young people are learning skills and competencies that will lay the foundation for future roles and prepare them for a career
  • Young people work with adults to make explicit expectations and achievable goals related to their experience
  • Work-based learning opportunities contribute to the young person’s personal, academic and professional development
