Key Distinguisher #2: Student Career Success  

The goal of work-based learning is to prepare young people for success in their career, including supporting them in examining their many future career options and gaining work experience beginning in high school.

Features of Student Career Success:     

  • Young people are expected to participate in a progressive sequence of work-based learning activities
  • Young people are able to choose pathways based on their interests and skills
  • Young people receive targeted resources to address challenges and inequities that may be obstacles to their success 
  • Work experiences are paid and are of sufficient duration for young people to apply learned skills as well as acclimate to the world of work
  • There are opportunities for work-based learning experiences to be connected (i.e. in the same field or with the same company in an advanced role) from year to year
  • Resources are available to facilitate credentialing, career readiness, career advancement and connection including advisement, alumni support, mentoring and other support services
